In the fall of 2003, my students and I built a two chamber Noborigama following the design plans from Will Ruggles and Douglas Rankin (The Studio Potter, Volume 22, December 1993). We moved the fire box into the front chamber for a greater accumulation of ash. Each chamber has a stacking space of approximately 45 cubic feet. We introduce salt in the second chamber. Construction of the kiln took approximately four weeks, working around class schedules. The kiln fires in 18-20 hours, using between one and two cords of wood. We fire with slab wood from a local mill.
